2 Muslims in New York arrested for vandalizing 911 memorial
New York’s Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) arrested a 20-year-old man and a juvenile Sunday for allegedly vandalizing a 9/11 memorial over the weekend. The worst part of this latest scandal is that the authorities let the no-bail policy stand, which could enable the vandals to flee without even standing trial, and not even paying for damages. New York's "laws" have to be fixed, and soon.
Tayyab Muhammad, the 20-year-old, and the minor were charged with criminal mischief and putting graffiti on the monument, according to police, ABC 7 News reported.
“This act of vandalism is an affront to the memory of those we lost and the heroes who sacrificed everything,” Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said.
The two allegedly spray painted the word “LIARS” on the memorial in red ink. They also graffitied “9/11 was [the] fault of the USA” over the names of the emergency personnel and others from Long Island who perished in the terror attack, according to the NCPD. Police said cameras captured Muhammad and his associate on the premises.
Police also claimed that the two caused $3,500 in damages at the memorial and other Tobay Beach locations they visited Saturday. These allegedly included bathrooms, a concession stand, a bathhouse and two restaurants.
Muhammad was arraigned and issued a plea of not guilty Monday. Authorities released him without bail.
The attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 claimed the lives of approximately 2,977 victims and marked the deadliest terror act on U.S. soil. The American government initiated its War on Terror in response to the attacks. The U.S. invaded then-Taliban controlled Afghanistan, which hosted Al-Qaeda, the group responsible for the attacks, in October 2001. The American intervention in that country lasted nearly 20 years and ended with the Taliban regaining control.
